The Establishment of a Technical Resource Center to Support Agro Forestry in Belize

In order to best support afforestation and agroforestry projects in Central America, as an environmentally sustainable alternative to existing, destructive, systems of agriculture and grazing, it is necessary to bring practical technology right to communities where it is desperately needed.

Establishment of a Technical Resource Center (TRC) will provide technical support to local landowners and farmers, to ensure greater participation, resulting in a lower cost per tree, per acre of land restored, per family assisted.

The TRC will assist development of well-coordinated, area-wide projects that address important community-wide concerns, such as declining groundwater resources.

By empowering local groups to restore tree cover to barren lands, the TRC will ensure continuing growth of this program over many years, resulting in the natural regeneration of diversity to now barren lands for the continuous benefit of the entire community.

The TRC will provide monitoring of economic and environmental benefits from these projects, thereby attracting investment from the private sector, also bringing livelihood opportunities to all participants. Because the activities of the TRC will result in voluntary planting of large numbers of permanent trees, which sequester high levels of atmospheric carbon in the most cost effective way possible, it additionally offers an efficient means to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the global atmosphere - to counter the threat from global climate change.
